It was Michael's birthday weekend
This last weekend we celebrated Michael's birthday. We started on Saturday with a tour of La Rivière cellars then a guided tour at Chateau Guibeau ending with a tour of Saint Emilion and dinner at Amelia Canta. On Sunday we had a long lunch with all our friends at our new place.
Thank you to all of you who drove for hours or sat on a long flight to be here.
Michael felt very celebrated and blessed.

entering the cellars
Château de la Rivière has a staggering 22 hectares of cellars, 8 hectares of which are galleried and used for the maturation of wine.
The cellars are ancient limestone quarries; you can still see where blocks have been painstakingly chocked out, chiseled and hand-cut with a saw. Apparently, some of the rock from here was transported to Paris to make the base of the Eiffel Tower.
During the German occupation the entrance to the cellars was disguised as a religious shrine in an attempt to prevent the army from discovering the huge quantity of wine stored below. On the limestone walls there are dates, numbers and signatures made by members of the French resistance who used the caves as storage for ammunition.
One of the estate’s numerous springs emerges in one of the galleries, but soon heads beneath ground again.
