I booked us train tickets to Salzburg on OBB the new train line. I booked us first class tickets there was an option for seat reservation at an additional cost that I didnt take. When we arrived and printed our ticket I noticed there were no seat numbers so we went on the train and took some seats. First class was completely booked. As the train started to leave a lady came up to us and told us we were in her seat. It was an American lady, she showed us her ticket and sure enough we were in her seat. There were no other seats available so I went to the conductor and asked him why I didnt have any seat number and where do I sit.
He looked at me all irritated and said if you wanted a seat you should have paid for one, you'll have to stand. WHAT! Who pays to stand in first class, I want a seat, I dont want to stand for 2 1/2 hours. He just walked away. I had to calm down before the "Latina" in me woke up. Then the seat option that I didnt take dawned on me, I didnt realize if you dont take the option you dont get a seat! It wasnt that much more I just assumed it was like the airlines where you would just get a seat when you arrived or you can pay to have the seat you want. I went back to the lady and she very kindly told us she was with a big group of people in the other cabin but if they got kicked out of their seats she was coming to take our 3 seats. At the next stop some people got off and we were tempted to take their seats but then our seats would get snatched up and if someone else got on with that seat number we would be without a seat again. We took our chance and stayed in our seats. It was four stops to Salzburg, each stop we waited to see if we still had a seat. We got lucky the lady never came back to claim her seats. I finally calmed down enough to order a coffee (like my nerves really needed the caffeine but hey, I wanted to experience the train coffee that I had seen everyone else

Lesson learned.
Salzburg means "Salt Castle" There are several salt mine tours but
we didnt have time to take one.
Sound of music was also filmed here, there are several "sound of music tours" but we decided to do our own thing.
