Viennese food

To really know the country is to know the food.
We had a list of all the things and places we needed to try. Wiener schnitzel, sachertorte, tafelspitz, apfelstrudel, nockerin, vanillekipferl goulash, we left no schnitzel unturned!

Oh Yes, the non smoking in restaurants doesnt exist in Austria, people still smoke while eating.

Kameel is a Viennese institution has been around since 1618. There is a deli where you can grab some of their legendary sandwiches or go into the restaurant

the place is elegant with a baroque flair
this place is really for the locals, I didnt hear any English spoken
our waiter
we met some Viennese friends here, they gave us all the insiders tips
We had just visited the Schönbrunn Palace and learned about Sisi and there she was. She never smiled because she didnt like her teeth.

Alt Wiener (dumpling soup)
I want some of these glasses, taken with my iphone, I couldnt get it to focus.
Or maybe I thought it was focused
some Austrian wine made Bordeaux style
We were told they had "light food"

Tafelspitz (boiled meat) with purée of spinach. Austrian food is known for being salty,
they werent kidding
a viennese crêpe with very sweet apricots,
Cafe Landtmann where the Apple Strudel was invented.
Since 1873 one of Vienna's most elegant cafes.

I was told this was Hilary Clinton's favorite place to eat.
the famous Apelstrudel
We went at 3:00 thinking we would have the place to ourselves, there was a 30 minute wait.

Michael was hungry so he ordered a soup and sausages
We thought the sausages would be grilled, they came boiled in water

comes with a vanilla custard and whipped cream (optional)

Next stop Demel, where Sisi ordered candied violets
Been around since 1786. The company bears the title of a Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court\

Up stairs are three elegant historic patisserie rooms, filled with marble coffee tables, chairs and red upholstered sofas in the window boxes. There is always a wait for a table.

one of the most famous chocolate is the "cats tongue"

Everything is so beautifully packaged

Enter Demel’s shop area and you have discovered the edible part of the Imperial Treasury. The most refined cakes and confectionery present themselves in an ambiente of polished dark wood, shiny glass, delicate stucco, and beautiful ceramics
the interior is a neo-baroque style, be ready to fight the crowds
candied violets Sisi's favorite

We were told Ofenloch was the place for dinner, with low arches, wooden paneled walls its one of the oldest restaurants in Vienna going back 400 years

Cafe central since 1876, a place where poets and writers met

I loved all the arches

Its Sisi!
